The city of Giessen and its municipal partner Swakopmund in Namibia were two of the host municipalities of the conference. Frank-Tilo Becher, Mayor of Giessen, and Blasius Goraseb, Mayor of Swakopmund, reported on their co-operative partnership.

The district of Giessen and its municipal partner Mubende in Uganda also organised the event. District Administrator Anita Schneider and Mayor Innocent Bakuluwgelo Ssekiziyivu spoke about the recipe for success behind their collaboration. Key ingredients include knowing each other well and trust.

Sascha Vogt assured the conference that the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) firmly supports municipal collaboration based on the principle of partnership.

The partnership conference was also about getting to know each other (increasingly well). The growing links between the partnerships and also between the municipalities of individual countries and regions are particularly valuable.

The Open Spaces on the first day of the conference addressed many topics. These included the new EU “Global Gateway” strategy, the implementation of major projects in municipal partnerships, adapting urban drainage systems to climate change, smart city solutions, clean drinking water, the recycling of solid waste, the “1.000 Schulen für unsere Welt” [1,000 schools for our world] project and disaster prevention.

The second day of the conference was also busy. Specific municipal topics relating to collaboration based on the principle of partnerships were discussed in numerous workshops.

Future leaders, trained to shape transformation processes with a view to a sustainable present and future, shared their analyses of their countries Ethiopia, Ghana and Togo. Shown in the picture (from left): Eden Tadesse from Ethiopia, Ebenezer Acheampong from Togo and Kodjo Isaac Atchikiti from Ghana together with Chris Büscher, staff member at the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) which offers the “Shaping Futures Academy” training programme for future leaders from Africa and Europe.
