The keynote address on day one of the conference was given by Dr Albrecht Schröter, who was Lord Mayor of the City of Jena from 2006 to 2018. In his speech, he emphasised that: 'Equality is the goal, and solidarity is the way to achieve it.' Regarding partners from the Global South, he said: 'This is about equal partnerships and about recognising the dignity of others'. He also pointed out that not everything that partners from the North consider useful is also a priority for partners from the South. It is important to fight inequality, he said, with concrete measures.
Barbara Baumbach, the officer responsible for the FKPW programme at Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), addressed the experts: 'The BMZ is aware that you are achieving a great deal. In your role as experts, you are moderators, networkers, coordinators and pioneers. You gather information, build structures and steer discussion processes. And in so doing you bring about the realisation of plans in spatial structures and processes. As you go about this work you need to highlight values and limits that apply across society– in the environmental, economic, social and cultural domains.'
