The conference will aim to strengthen the network of German-Ukrainian municipal partnerships, and highlight opportunities for action and cooperation between Ukrainian, German and other European partner municipalities in times of war. It will also send a signal of solidarity with Ukrainian municipalities and regions.
The conference is aimed at mayors, district chief executives, and representatives of German, Ukrainian and selected European municipalities that maintain partnerships with each other. We look forward to welcoming the members of the partnerships in the German-Ukrainian municipal network who are attending in-person at the KONGRESSHALLE am Zoo in Leipzig. For other interested parties and those who are unable to travel to the conference, a livestream broadcast and online participation in hybrid workshops are planned.
The conference will provide an opportunity for a moderated dialogue between the partnerships on current needs, projects and challenges of German-Ukrainian cooperation during the wartime situation and with regard to reconstruction. Best practice examples from European municipal cooperation will be presented, including on the topics of water supply and urban development. Panel discussions will consider opportunities and ways to strengthen local self-government, and hold a dialogue on sustainable reconstruction and the role of Ukrainian, German and other European partner municipalities in reconstruction. Specialist excursions on the topics of urban development, migration, fair trade and structural change will round off the conference agenda.
A round table for German and Ukrainian mayors and district chief executives will be held as a high-level segment of the conference on 14 November 2023. This will be organised by the Association of German Cities, in cooperation with the German County Association and the Association of German Towns and Municipalities.
The conference will be held in German and Ukrainian, as well as English (simultaneous interpretation).
