The 2030 Agenda – Local governance exchange with African partners

Building global partnerships for sustainable development is a key message of the 2030 Agenda. Implementing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) formulated as part of the 2030 Agenda is defined as a task for the whole international community. All municipalities in the Global North and South are called upon to make their contribution – both within their own local setting, and together with partners. This new Service Agency project focuses on local governance exchange with partners from African countries.

With the adoption of the 2030 Agenda by the United Nations in 2015, municipal engagement for development and sustainability gained further importance. This is because two thirds of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) formulated in the 2030 Agenda can only be implemented at the local level. Municipalities worldwide therefore have a key role to play in implementing the 2030 Agenda. Translating the 2030 Agenda into concrete activities at the local level is also referred to internationally as 'localising the 2030 Agenda'. It involves the following steps:

  • Public information and awareness-raising
  • Analysis and baseline surveys
  • Strategy development and planning
  • Implementation and monitoring

Municipalities in African partner countries possess extensive experience with the local implementation of global agreements. In the past they made their contributions towards implementing the Millennium Development Goals (MDSs), and placed their local development strategies and projects within this context. German municipalities have valuable experience to contribute in the field of sustainability, which they gained from the Local Agenda 21 processes, amongst others.

The new project 'The 2030 Agenda – Local governance exchange with African partners' involves expert exchange on local governance between municipal actors in Germany and Africa. The Service Agency is implementing it on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

What we offer you:

The project ‘The 2030 Agenda – Local governance exchange with African partners' offers municipalities advice on localising the 2030 Agenda in their own particular setting. It also offers various platforms for networking, in order to establish expert dialogue and exchange between German and African municipalities on implementing the 2030 Agenda, and to foster peer-to-peer learning and the sharing of experiences and knowledge by working in partnership.

Who we're addressing:

These services are designed for German municipalities that already have partnerships with African municipalities, and/or wish to get involved in implementing the 2030 Agenda. The project also aims to support the establishment of new links and partnerships.

How we support you:
  • Preparation of studies to localise the 2030 Agenda in specific African countries as a knowledge base
  • Needs-based advice for municipal partnerships on integrating the 2030 Agenda into their work, plus support for partnerships in all phases of the localisation process, from raising public awareness of the 2030 Agenda through to planning joint projects for implementation
  • Conduct of information events, workshops, symposia, network meetings and conferences for German and African municipalities interested in dialogue on local sustainability policy in the context of the 2030 Agenda
  • Financing and professional facilitation of municipal exchange visits for expert dialogue on the 2030 Agenda
  • Support in finding possible African partner municipalities for mutual expert exchange
